Clay Nation (Material Design)

Association: Clay Mates
Project: Clay Nation Texture Design
Time: August 2022 – February 2023

One of my proudest accomplishments at Clay Nation was my procedural SBSAR material, built to be the master material for the project. This SBSAR file was used to generate a majority of textures, used for everything from assets to the environment itself. Examples can be seen throughout my “Asset Design” and “Environment Design” portfolio posts.

The large list of effects possible with this file were all built on top of each other, organized so that it can be easily edited within the graph editor. Building it this way made it so new effects could be easily added which grew the possible combination exponentially. All effects could be controlled by simple toggles and sliders extracted from the graph, this also included a number of pre-built presets for base materials and “lite” versions of the material that could be created for more specific tasks. All of this could be imported and used within almost all #D software.

This tool was great for the small-sized team, dramatically decreasing the time it took to create new materials, also making it so we could easily adjust them on the fly in whichever software we were using. It gave everything a consistent look throughout the project since it all came from the same base parameters, but at the same time varied enough to be used in drastically different situations.
